The Honey Bee

Bees pollinate approximately 30% of the world's food crops and 90% of wild plants.

Every season, pollination from honey bees and native pollinators deliver billions of dollars (U.S.) in economic value. Between $235 and $577 billion (U.S.) worth of annual global food production relies on their contribution.

To produce a single pound of honey, a colony of bees must collect nectar from approximately 2 million flowers and fly over 55,000 miles.  This amounts to a lifetimes worth of work for around 8,000 honey bees.

Since 2006 approximately one third of all honeybee colonies have collapsed for reasons including exposure, pesticides, loss of habitat, poor food supply, and parasite infestation.
